This certificate is designed for people who wish to further improve their skills for routine personal, community or workplace purposes, or to further general education studies. Upon completion of this course you will have the gained confidence in general reading, writing and numeracy.

Library & computer facilities
Our campus libraries offer career advice, academic resources and learning and IT support in relaxed lounge-like settings. You'll have access to photocopying, computing and printing facilities as well as electronic and print resources.
You'll have access to a rich collection of online resources at any time of the day or night, including databases, e-learning content for courses, student email, student software packages and social networking tools.
VU has one of the best campus-wide WiFi networks. We also have more than 4000 computers (PCs and Apple Mac) spread across our campuses. A central IT helpdesk is also available for support.

This course will improve your literacy, numeracy, communication and computer skills, as well as improve your confidence. These skills will create more options for your career path in the future. Studying this course will help you access further certificates in general education, further TAFE studies or other training or work opportunities.
Course structure
To be awarded the 22472VIC Certificate I in General Education for Adults, 16 units must be completed consisting of:
- 2 core units
- 14 elective units, comprising of:
- 3 core skills reading and oracy units
- 3 core writing units
- 4 core skills numeracy and mathematics units, and
- 4 special interest electives units, which can be selected from:
- units listed in the special interest electives list, which have not previously been completed
- core skills reading and oracy, writing and numeracy and mathematics units from the 22476VIC Certificate I in General Education for Adults (Introductory), or the 22472VIC Certificate I in General Education for Adults or the 22473VIC Certificate II in General Education for Adults, which have not previously been completed, and/or
- units/modules which are first packaged in AQF level 1 or 2 qualifications in nationally endorsed training packages or accredited curriculum.

Learning outcomes
22472VIC Certificate I in General Education For Adults qualification learning outcomes are as follows:
Knowledge
Graduates at this level will have foundational knowledge for everyday life, further learning and preparation for initial work through knowledge:
- of the importance of documenting learning to support progress and factors which can support or hinder progress in learning
- of different learning strategies and how they contribute to learning
- that texts have different audiences and purposes
- of reading strategies and features in a range of familiar and less familiar text types
- of basic structural conventions of text types, and
- that signs/prints/symbols represent meaning in familiar mathematical information.
Skills
Graduates at this level will have foundational cognitive and communication skills to:
- clarify project goals with an appropriate support person, plan, carry out, document and evaluate a project
- develop, implement and review learning goals
- read, interpret and evaluate familiar and less familiar texts
- create a range of familiar and some less familiar texts with some specialised vocabulary
- interpret, use, estimate and calculate a range of simple numerical information for immediate personal purposes and some less familiar contexts, and
- use paper based and web based mediums to engage with and create texts of limited complexity.
Application of knowledge and skills
Graduates at this level will apply knowledge and skills to demonstrate autonomy in highly structured and stable contexts and within narrow parameters through:
- working to an agreed program to plan, implement and monitor progress towards achievement of learning goals
- practical application of an agreed action plan in a project activity in a familiar and some less familiar contexts and/or around a specific content area of interest
- interpreting and evaluating a range of familiar and less familiar text types of limited complexity in a range of familiar contexts
- creating a range of familiar and less familiar paper based and web based texts of limited complexity related to different purposes, which may include some unfamiliar aspects, and
- applies mathematical information and problem solving strategies in familiar contexts.

Students who enrol in a:
- government subsidised place pay subsidised tuition fees (the government contributes the rest), and may be required to pay a Student Services and Amenities Fee along with any material fees
- full fee-paying place pay the full fee tuition rate (which includes Student Services and Amenities Fee and any material fees).

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

You may be able to complete your qualification sooner through formal recognition of your existing skills. This is known as Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
To receive RPL, we assess your previous work, education and life experiences against recognised qualifications. Applications for RPL can be made prior to enrolling.

Prior to enrolment, all applicants will be required to complete a literacy and numeracy assessment to assist with determining eligibility and to identify learning support needs.
