During this course you’ll develop skills and knowledge in:

- digital literacy.
This course will help you to prepare for further literacy and numeracy study in a supportive and encouraging environment. This certificate is designed for people who wish to improve their skills for personal, community or workplace purposes.
Upon completion of this course you will have gained confidence in basic reading, writing and numeracy.

Our campus libraries offer career advice, academic resources and learning and IT support in relaxed lounge-like settings. You'll have access to photocopying, computing and printing facilities as well as electronic and print resources.
You'll have access to a rich collection of online resources at any time of the day or night, including databases, e-learning content for courses, student email, student software packages and social networking tools.
VU has one of the best campus-wide WiFi networks. We also have more than 4000 computers (PCs and Apple Mac) spread across our campuses. A central IT helpdesk is also available for support.

Course structure
To be awarded the 22476VIC Certificate I in General Education for Adults (Introductory), 16 units must be completed consisting of:

14 elective units, comprising of:
- 3 core skills reading and oracy units
- 3 core skills writing units
- 4 core skills numeracy and mathematics units
- 4 special interest electives, which can be selected from:
- units listed in the special interest electives list, which have not been previously completed, and/or
- core skills reading and oracy, writing and numeracy and mathematics units from the 22476VIC Certificate I in General Education for Adults (Introductory), or the 22471VIC Course in Initial General Education for Adults or the 22472VIC Certificate I in General Education for Adults, which have not been previously completed, and/or
- units/modules which are first packaged in AQF level 1 or 2 qualifications in nationally endorsed training packages or accredited curriculum.

Learning outcomes
22476VIC Certificate I in General Education for Adults (Introductory) qualification learning outcomes are as follows:
Knowledge
Graduates at this level will have foundational knowledge for everyday life, further learning and preparation for initial work through knowledge of:
- own short term learning objectives
- highly familiar and predictable text types relevant to own needs
- basic reading strategies to engage with familiar paper based and web based text types, and
- stages or processes of writing including planning, drafting and editing.
Skills
Graduates at this level will have foundational cognitive, technical and communication skills to:
- identify and review achievement of own short term learning objectives
- undertake defined routine activities such as planning and carrying out a simple project based on own identified interests
- identify and report simple issues and problems such as identifying problems in achieving learning goals
- use a limited range of reading strategies to create meaning from simple familiar and predictable text types
- convey and discuss information about texts
- construct simple and familiar text with appropriate support
- apply simple mathematical knowledge in familiar and everyday situations, and
- use paper based and web based mediums to engage with and create simple texts.
Application of knowledge and skills
Graduates at this level will apply knowledge and skills to demonstrate autonomy in highly structured and stable contexts and within narrow parameters through:
- working with a support person to discuss, identify and implement own short term learning objectives
- completing project tasks according to agreed steps
- working with other learners to discuss roles and expected outcomes for a project
- locating, reading and interpreting specific information in simple, familiar and predictable paper based and web based text types
- creating texts for a limited purpose and audience, and
- applying relevant mathematical information in familiar contexts.

Students who enrol in a:
- government subsidised place pay subsidised tuition fees (the government contributes the rest), and may be required to pay a Student Services and Amenities Fee along with any material fees
- full fee-paying place pay the full fee tuition rate (which includes Student Services and Amenities Fee and any material fees).

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

You may be able to complete your qualification sooner through formal recognition of your existing skills. This is known as Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).
To receive RPL, we assess your previous work, education and life experiences against recognised qualifications. Applications for RPL can be made prior to enrolling.
