VU’s Master of Digital Media is designed for a future-focused professional with an entrepreneurial spirit.
This course, informed by an advisory panel of prominent practitioners from industry and government, offers key insights into the very latest industry practices and processes.
Through our flexible and regularly updated curriculum, you’ll learn the skills to excel in:
- user experience (UX) design
- game production
- search engine optimisation
- content production and strategy
- visualisations of data
- social network and web analytics
- design research.
You’ll also graduate with an impressive portfolio of UX and human-centred design research method examples.
On completion you’ll be ready to work as a digital media strategist, web designer or cross-media practitioner – making you indispensable in this global, progressive sector.
Industry relevance
The course is informed by industry experts to help you understand and respond to the issues facing the industry.
In your second year of study, you’ll undertake a research project with both a practical and written component and have the option to link this to a known industry problem.
You can also gain sought-after business skills by embarking on a work placement or internship within our network of industry leaders.
VU also runs an annual event, to which all past graduates are invited, where we discuss and analyse that year’s industry developments, how we’ve incorporated them in our businesses and projects - and what’s in store for the future of digital media.

Students can receive assignment credit for attending one of the many industry events in Melbourne.
City Campus
Delivered by VU’s College of Arts, this course is taught at our City Campus. In the heart of Melbourne’s busy CBD, the campus is within walking distance to a range of great restaurants, shops and easy transport options.
A flexible postgraduate program
This master degree is the final stage of a nested suite of three courses that make up the Master of Digital Media. The first stage is a Graduate Certificate in Digital Media and the second stage is a Graduate Diploma in Digital Media. Alternatively, you can enrol directly in this Master of Digital Media course.
Completion of one stage gives you credit towards the next. You can choose to exit the graduate certificate or graduate diploma level.
Kids in Class program
Students studying Digital Media now have the chance to bring their children, of all ages, to class.
The Kids in Class program offers students four kid-friendly tutorials for every unit they study. The remainder of units can be completed online, with the option to attend tutorials in person. Participating units:

- Fumi Goto (currently Digital Services Lead, Australia Health Practitioner Regulation Agency), Winner of the Malthouse Most Creative Postgraduate Digital Media student 2018 (awarded at our 2019 College Awards).

- Maria Sol Paredes Vidal, for winning a funded place on the program “Study Melbourne Language & Internship Program in China”, a partnership between the Victorian Government and the China Education Association for International Exchange (CEAIE).
- Biplav Acharya, Mario Beltran, Miriam Gelotte, Sumanth Jagarlamudi and also alumni, Tomas Krcho for presenting at VU’s Teaching and Learning Symposium 2019.

- Janice Jao, key designer at Appetiser Apps, won Deloitte's Rising Star Award 2019.
- Biplav Acharya, Miriam Gelotte, Mario Beltran and Hazel Ngari, as part of the Connected Learning Team, won the Vice Chancellor’s award for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (Programs that Enhance Learning) 2019.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

What's a unit?
A unit or 'subject' is the actual class you'll attend in the process of completing a course.
Most courses have a mixture of compulsory 'core' units that you need to take and optional elective units that you can choose to take based on your area of interest, expertise or experience.
Credits
Each unit is worth a set amount of study credits based on the amount of time you study. Generally, 1 credit is equal to 1 hour of study per week.

Entry requirements
Completion of an Australian Bachelor degree (or equivalent) in any discipline
OR
Completion of an Australian Graduate Diploma (or equivalent) in a similar discipline
PLUS
IELTS (or equivalent): Overall score of 6.5 (with no band less than 6.0 in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking)
