This unit (APT6023) provides opportunity for students to develop competency in working with diversity through a combination of reflection, analysis and in class discussion. A significant component of the unit will be devoted to issues relevant to counselling standards and practice frameworks for working with individuals from a range of diverse backgrounds and to developing cultural competence in the form of knowledge, skills and understanding essential to working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. Analyse and challenge one's own values, cultural assumptions and cultural position;  
  2. Elucidate specific counselling related issues relevant to working with clients from diverse backgrounds;  
  3. Develop cultural competence and principles of practice related to working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities; and  
  4. Critically reflect upon and apply skills in counselling diverse clients.
