This unit (HMH7105) is a clinical placement unit which provides students with osteopathic workplace experience through their clinical placement hours in the student led osteopathic clinics. Students will be treating members of the public under the supervision of osteopathic clinical educators and will contribute to clinical operations. The clinical placement hours within this unit develop students' capacity for teamwork, collaboration with peers and supervisors and communication with patients. This unit provides the environment for students to develop their confidence and maturity as an osteopathic practitioner.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. Formulate differential diagnoses for patient presenting complaints with consideration of biopsychosocial factors;  
  2. Formulate and implement appropriate clinical assessment of the patient in the clinical environment including osteopathic, medical and safety assessment.  
  3. Prescribe, implement and reflect on appropriate biopsychosocial management and patient outcomes; and  
  4. Contextualise effective communication skills including obtaining informed consent in the clinical environment.  

Assessment

The MCQ assesses fundamental knowledge of safety principles and communication with patients. The OCPA and ROF are assessments performed in the clinical setting, assessed by the supervising clinician, of various aspects a student's performance of skills and communication with a patient. Finally, the student is assessed on a case study of an observed patient and a patient referral letter to health professional.

Students are required to gain a pass in all assessment items to pass this unit. Students must also provide a completed workbook demonstrating required number of clinical hours and a record of patient consultations to pass this unit.
