This unit (HBO3008) further strengthens students' ability to recognize the relevant biomedical science concepts for presenting complaints by applying them to conditions affecting the abdomen. Students extend their knowledge of anatomy, physiology, histology and embryology and discuss the relevance for conditions affecting the abdomen and pelvis.

Prerequisites

HBO2007 - Biomedical Science for Osteopathy 7

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. Commentate on the relevant anatomy, histology and embryology of the abdomen and pelvis;
  2. Report on the physiological processes of the viscera of the abdomen and pelvis; and
  3. Analyse selected common and serious conditions affecting the abdominal and pelvic viscera.

Assessment

The test evaluates key concepts of anatomy, physiology, pathology, specific to the upper gastrointestinal tract. The essay requires students to individually develop a commentary on a common digestive disorder. To successfully complete this written task, students will need to engage with the scientific literature and discuss the potential role that osteopathy can play in the management of their selected disorder. The multi-station laboratory exam assesses students' knowledge of the anatomy, physiology, histology, embryology and pathology of the abdomen and pelvis. This practical assessment uses specimens, models, and histology slides explored in the laboratory classes. In the case study analysis, students must demonstrate their knowledge of biomedical theory in the context of clinical scenarios. This assessment requires students to apply their knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pathology, by responding to patient scenarios involving genitourinary and hormonal disorders.
Assessment type Description Grade
Essay Individual commentary on common condition (750 words) 20%
Practicum Multi-station practical laboratory exam (1hr) 35%
Test Test (online MCQ) (30mins) 10%
Case Study Individual case study analysis (2 hours) 35%
