Our Diploma of Information Technology has been designed for students taking the first step towards our bachelor degree, and professionals building their current IT knowledge and skills.
We help you prepare for a degree with targeted support and tuition. We'll also help you enhance your professional-communication and academic-writing skills.
You’ll learn up-to-date skills and knowledge for a career in IT, including:
- networking (CISCO)
- designing databases
- writing computer programs in Python
- connecting databases to dynamic websites
- scheduling ICT development using Microsoft Project
- using Linux (LPI).
If you successfully complete this diploma you will be eligible for a guaranteed place in the second year of the Bachelor of Information Technology, the Bachelor of Cyber Security or the Bachelor of Data Science.
Hybrid learning (online & in person)
Our Diploma of Information Technology follows a hybrid learning model and is delivered through a combination of on-campus (in person) and online study.
You'll be able to access resources and complete activities online, prior to attending face-to-face sessions, where your learning will be consolidated.
Women in IT
Our Women in Science Engineering program supports our current university students, and inspires women to choose engineering and science careers.
We run hands-on workshops in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines for secondary-school students.
Learning advice

Our students can attend Learning Hubs at one of five VU campuses.

Our campus libraries have photocopying, computing and printing facilities as well as electronic and print resources.

On campus, we make sure that all of our students have access to digital resources. We offer:
- excellent WiFi networks

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. | Apply a broad body of fundamental knowledge of information technologies in the areas of programming, networking, web development, operating systems, databases, and ICT management; | ||
2. | Use the latest information technologies, and with self-learning capabilities, solve real-world ICT-related problems; | ||
3. | Exhibit a range interpersonal and academic skills with a strong focus on development practice in an independent or collaborative environment, and; | ||
4. | Present foundation technical and theoretical knowledge and skills for industry certifications from reputable international vendors, CISCO Certified Network Associate (CCNA) and Linux Professional Institute Certification (LPIC-1). |
What's a unit?
A unit or 'subject' is the actual class you'll attend in the process of completing a course.
Most courses have a mixture of compulsory 'core' units that you need to take and optional elective units that you can choose to take based on your area of interest, expertise or experience.
Credits
Each unit is worth a set amount of study credits based on the amount of time you study. Generally, 1 credit is equal to 1 hour of study per week.

- Australian Senior Secondary Certificate (e.g. VCE) or
- an Australian or overseas equivalent or

Why is ATAR not applicable?
You will not need an ATAR score to meet the admission requirements for this course. Only the successful completion of your secondary school studies, and any additional prerequisites. Our courses and support programs are designed to prepare students from diverse cultures for success, regardless of their prior experience, ATAR, age, socioeconomic or educational background.
Applicants with vocational education and training (VET/TAFE) study
This information is for people who have completed an accredited award at an Australian Registered Training Organisation.
Admission criteria
Any Certificate IV in Information Technology or equivalent.

This information is for people whose highest level of study since leaving secondary education is a higher education course.
