Overview

Turn your passion for furniture making into a career with the Certificate II in Cabinet Making and Timber Technology MSF20322 at Victoria University Polytechnic.

This cabinet-making course will provide you with foundational skills to manufacture and install furniture and cabinetry. You’ll finish the course prepared to work in furniture making, specialising in manufacturing and installing fitted furniture for kitchens and bathrooms.

Along with career skills such as communication and safe-work practices, you will master woodwork techniques including:

  • taking accurate measurements for cabinets and other furniture
  • creating basic technical drawings
  • using hand tools and power tools
  • assembling and finishing cabinets
  • applying surface coating with a spray gun.

Careers in furniture and cabinet making

Following this furniture- and cabinet-making course, you'll be ready to work as an assistant, or under general supervision as a member of a team, building free-standing or built-in furniture.

Graduating with a solid understanding of quality manufacturing, you will be ready for workshop-based or on-site roles, including:

  • timber and composite furniture creation
  • kitchen and bathroom renovation
  • built-in cabinet installation
  • production operations.

Job titles include:

  • assistant cabinet maker
  • assistant installer of built-in cabinets for kitchens.

Course structure

To be awarded the MSF20322 Certificate II in Cabinet Making and Timber Technology, a total of twelve (12) units of competency must be achieved, comprising:
-
seven (7) core units, and;
-
five (5) elective units, of which:

- at least three (3) units coded MSFFM or MSFKB from the list of electives
- up to two (2) additional units from the elective list or from any endorsed Training Package or accredited course. Elective units must be relevant to the work environment and the qualification, maintain the integrity of the AQF alignment and contribute to a valid, industry-supported vocational outcome.

The course structure comprises the following core and elective units. These electives have been selected based on industry needs, graduate pathways and/or student and teacher feedback.

ELECTIVE UNITS

This qualification describes the skills and knowledge required to perform the manufacture of free-standing furniture or built-in cabinets and provide on-site assistance in the installation of furniture or cabinets involving known routines and procedures and some accountability for the quality of outcomes. It reflects vocational outcomes for those performing as assistant cabinet makers, assistant installers of built-in cabinets, and production operators within a cabinet making enterprise. Cabinets include free-standing and built-in furniture or fitted cabinets, such as those used in kitchens and bathrooms. Skills are also included that cover assisting in the installation or renovation of kitchens and bathrooms and other fitted cabinets, which involves collaboration with others through members of a group or team.

  • government subsidised place pay subsidised tuition fees (the government contributes the rest), and may be required to pay a Student Services and Amenities Fee along with any material fees
  • full fee-paying place pay the full fee tuition rate (which includes Student Services and Amenities Fee and any material fees).
