This unit (SPE3005) provides an opportunity for students to integrate and apply their discipline-specific knowledge and skills acquired through their course to their transition to careers in physical education. Students conduct a project exploring their personal conceptualisation of physical education; explore the ethical dimensions of roles in physical education; and develop knowledge and skills to enable them to be proactive and strategic in career planning in the physical education and associated industry sectors. Topics explored include views of contemporary physical education practice; changing understandings of physical education; professional ethics; career professional development, and physical education and exercise and sport science industry engagement.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. Critically analyse and evaluate theoretical knowledge in order to anticipate and creatively solve problems related to professional practice;  
  2. Determine and evaluate the ethical implications of professional practice in physical education and associated industry sectors;  
  3. Articulate a personal conceptualisation of sport and physical education and advocate the importance of sport and physical education in the development of the whole person; and  
  4. Derive ethical positions and coherently justify that position in relation to personal goals in work and learning.
