Enhancing strength and power is crucial to developing athletes who are able to sprint faster, jump higher, stop and change direction quicker and produce greater force. In order to develop stronger and more explosive athletes, practitioners require an understanding of the theories underpinning each capacity along with the interactions between factors such as program design, training load, adaptation, fatigue and recovery. The aim of this unit is to provide students with the knowledge, understanding and skills to design and implement effective strength and power programs that enhance these abilities of individual athlete involved in a high performance environment, as well as accompanying testing to help measure improvements.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. Formulate a force-velocity profile for an individual;
  2. Critique, cross-examine and coach specialised power and plyometric techniques to be utilised in the formulation of a power-based training program; and,
  3. Propose and contextualise exercises used in the development of an advanced strength and power-based training program addressing the needs of an individual athlete.

Assessment

Assessment type Description Grade
Test Create, evaluate and be tested on a force-velocity profile which can be used as part of the formulation of a strength and power program for an athlete 20%
Case Study Data interpretation and program development for enhancing sports specific strength and power for a case study athlete 50%
Presentation Demonstrating knowledge and coaching of power and plyometric exercises and how these can be used in an athletic training program 30%
