The learning for this unit of study focuses on exercise assessments and interventions for musculoskeletal conditions; this being a core knowledge and skills category requirement for graduates seeking professional accreditation with Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA). This unit (SCL6202) of study will cover a range of topics relating to acute, sub-acute, and chronic musculoskeletal conditions in practice. The theory component of this unit will cover the pathophysiology and presentation of a wide range of conditions throughout the musculoskeletal system. The practical component will cover a range of assessment procedures, including tests relating to posture and gait assessment; palpation & surface anatomy; manual muscle testing, goniometry; passive/resisted muscle testing and special tests.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. Investigate, interpret, and critically reflect on knowledge of a broad range of acute, sub-acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions and stages of rehabilitation;  
  2. Critically review research relating to a range of assessment procedures and techniques to allow for competent assessment of acute, sub-acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions;  
  3. Integrate theoretical knowledge into the implementation of practical skills in order to safely prescribe effective exercise programs for individuals with musculoskeletal conditions, and their complex care needs;  
  4. Critically evaluate evidence relating to assessment results for acute, sub-acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions; and  
  5. Implement and exemplify the high standards of ethical and professional practice required in client management.
