In Smart Water Systems Design, the students will gain specialist skills for the design and management of issues related to both water quantity and quality within an urban context from the natural catchments supplying water to urban areas and blended with modern smart technologies. To counter the impacts of urbanisation, the concept of "water sensitive urban design" (WSUD) will also be introduced. Design of water infrastructure and WSUD strategies including, storage dams, water supply network and urban stormwater drainage, wetlands, raingardens, etc will also be undertaken. Construction and maintenance of urban water systems, detailed design of pipe network, selection of materials, inspection techniques, maintenance and rehabilitation techniques will also be introduced. Efficient water supply with minimum water losses will be covered in the contents.
Students will be given the opportunity to develop skills in the application of computer models (eg. EPANET) in the design and assessment of urban water infrastructure and use these models to develop a better understanding of the application of best design and management practice in integrated urban water systems. Students will also learn cross disciplinary technologies to design the water systems that are currently used. These include modern equipment, their installations, functions, and use will also be introduced.
