In Advanced Materials and Asset Management of Infrastructure, the students will gain specialist skills in civil engineering materials, guided by experts in novel processing, characterisation, and design techniques. Materials include concrete, pavement and smart asphalt materials, steel, polymers, composites, and cement-based materials as used in infrastructure systems. The related processes of sustainable design practice, sustainability metrics, life-cycle analysis as well as energy, water and other natural resource used are also elaborated. Using sustainability-related calculators, the calculation of relevant sustainability metrics for the material process are discussed. Elaboration to process chart for materials with material flow charts to identify the inflow of raw materials, energy and water to the production process as well as output, emissions and waste. This unit (NNC7003) also covers advanced asset management topics such as asset performance, monitoring, and prediction, data management, optimising investment, regulatory and government roles, and organisational culture. An understanding of international standards and ISO 55001:2014 is also covered at the organizational level. A vast majority of engineers in Australia, and around the world, are involved in managing infrastructure assets. Training will be provided to achieve safety, performance, and cost imperatives at concept development, feasibility analysis, design, construction, operation, maintenance, alteration/ renewals, and disposal of infrastructure. The processes of life cycle and risk management, maintenance requirement analysis, systems reliability engineering, and financial management for infrastructure assets are covered in this unit.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. Grade different wastes and recycled materials as sustainable civil engineering materials;
  2. Develop new methods to produce sustainable concrete, steel, and soils and their responses to stresses through literature and laboratory practical;
  3. Collaborate and invent asset management organizational models, roles, and responsibilities; and
  4. Develop continuous improvement in the strategic and tactical response of organizations to the management of infrastructure assets.
