The unit will focus on an advanced understanding of the sustainable approaches for design of major civil engineering infrastructures such as transport, energy, waste management, water infrastructure, and high-rise buildings. The unit focuses on design of major civil infrastructure while considering the lower carbon footprints, protecting ecosystems, consider the climate change. The unit also covers the uses of natural resources/ systems to align with the functioning of civil infrastructure. Growing role of fair work regulations and basic human rights in the construction industry, securing eco-friendly, environment-friendly designs using engineering and industrial innovations will be incorporated beyond just meeting the minimum requirements. Ultimately, the unit will demonstrate the practical examples how to use sustainability ratings for the selection of infrastructure designs. The role of infrastructure on a society and the enhanced benefits of sustainable infrastructure on the equity principles. The approaches based on basic principles of sustainable designs will be explored with a vision to increase the employments while avoiding the serious concerns on the financial viability of the projects. Elaboration of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) techniques using established and modern techniques will be demonstrated. The students will also be taught about ensuring the value of money while designing such projects and elaborate these aspects of design in best way of communication techniques. Thus, the unit will enable students to advance their technical knowledge in the sustainable design of major infrastructures, and further develop the problem solving and technical communication skills as well.
