This unit (NIT1103) aims to develop a set of skills associated with oral, written, technical and online communication. Students locate and assembling reliable sources of information for collation and presentation. Information is stored and managed electronically for effective storage and communication. Content includes an overview of the Internet, characteristics and functions of browsers, resources on the Internet, using search engines effectively, and application of IT technology to information gathering, storage and reporting. The unit also addresses formal and academic written communication.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. Review and locate relevant Web-based and other resources;  
  2. Assess and evaluate resources and make judgements and decisions on their reliability and validity;  
  3. Access, collate and synthesise information from a variety of sources;  
  4. Plan and apply a variety of approaches to design and present researched information to given problem; and  
  5. Collaborate with others using effective interpersonal skills to design and develop online material, with responsibility for own output.
