This unit (NBC4002) introduces and facilitates the student's technical knowledge and skills in Building Information Modelling (BIM) and BIM management concepts as required by a BIM manager in the industry. The unit also covers the current practices and approaches used in the construction industry including sustainable construction, lean construction and prefabrication.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. Develop a well-defined process using BIM to ensure collaboration between all project participants with the client requirements;
  2. Interpret the BIM terminologies and gain knowledge on project execution plans using BIM management concepts;
  3. Design for efficient management of resources and use of software in the application of Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology and management;
  4. Cross-examine the theoretical knowledge of the lean construction, prefabrication and simulation in construction with an introduction to green rating tools.

Assessment

Assessment type Description Grade
Test Two In-class tests (10% each) 20%
Review Individual review and presentation 15%
Assignment Group assignment report and Presentation 50%
Other Focus group discussion (individually assessed) 15%
The assessment tasks link the learning outcomes and the graduate capabilities. The first two tests are designed to evaluate the knowledge of BIM terminologies and BIM management concepts using written tests. In the second assessment task student undertake a research and review task on smart technologies/green and lean construction and prepare a summarised a critique presentation. The Group assignment involves a simulation of an existing building project, with respect to the BIM dimensions of 3D, 4D, 5D and 6D. Using the project results the students will provide recommendations and suggestions to improve the current design and construction of the building. The results of the real-time building project are presented to an industry/academic panel through a poster presentation and feedbacks will be provided. In the focus group discussion students will take part in an instructor facilitated discussion on a selected topics relevant to the learning outcomes. Students will be evaluated based on the communication skills, active engagement and representation of critical information.
