In this unit, paramedicine students will continue to apply and consolidate their skills within a workplace integrated learning environment. Students will undertake clinical placement with industry partners, such as ambulance services, under the guidance and supervision of Registered Paramedics and health care professionals. Through clinical placement, students will have the opportunity to participate in safe, effective and appropriate communication with patients and to practice as culturally safe and capable clinicians. Students will have the opportunity to apply, integrate, consolidate and extend their theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Students will be exposed to patient records and practice documentation and intra/interprofessional communication. Throughout clinical placement, students will engage in critical reflection, to stimulate continued student development.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. Consolidate the principles of culturally safe practice to the care of individuals; irrespective of culture, values, beliefs and socio-economic status across the lifespan;  
  2. Consolidate a person-centred approach, in the context of paramedicine, demonstrating effective communication within the health care setting;  
  3. Demonstrate competency in safely assessing and managing patients with a range of conditions, relevant to their scope of practice;  
  4. Contexualise the impact of the relevant code of conduct in clinical decision making in Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), legislation and regulatory requirements; and  
  5. Engage in critical reflection and respond appropriately to feedback regarding performance and behaviour.

To obtain a Pass grade for this unit, all components of assessment must be attempted and passed. This unit has a total 140 hours of clinical placement including 112* hours of supervised professional clinical placement and 28 hours of high-fidelity simulation. The high-fidelity clinical simulation which will be delivered across units HFB3134 and HFB3234 and assessed within this unit. Clinical placement may occur at any time of the year. These hours are mandatory as they link to the expected learning outcomes of this program. *These hours may vary due to the operational and logistical availability of industry partners.
