It examines some key issues in children's literature through the analysis of texts. This analysis explores the intersectionality of gender, class, race and ethnicity, as well as historical and current issues surrounding diversity and inclusion.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students will be able to:
  1. Consolidate and synthesise an awareness of some key issues debated around the idea of 'children's literature' with particular emphasis on the Australian context;  
  2. Analyse a range of fiction designed for children with particular reference to elements of genre, narrative and ideology;  
  3. Critically apply relevant literary theory in individual and collaborative contexts; and  
  4. Exhibit a clear, coherent and independent development of writing, research and reflective skills.
