Preservice teachers will build their knowledge of how science, maths and technology is articulated in early childhood centres as a means for young children to express themselves as human beings. As part of the unit, students will engage with the languages of maths, science & technology in developing an understanding of the structures of each of these languages and how these languages can inspire multi-disciplinary experiences for young children to make meaning of their worlds. Preservice teachers will investigate each of these concepts using what they know about engaging with place and the entangled stories they encounter. They will also use knowledge of early childhood research to help them understand how these languages operate in early childhood settings. By viewing the child as capable, this unit will inspire us to look beyond the traditional notions of these disciplinary areas.
