Gain the skills, knowledge and confidence to become an internationally qualified nurse in Australia, with the unique OSCE Preparation Program for Nurses at Victoria University (VU) in Melbourne.
The OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) is a rigorous practical assessment of clinical skills required for nursing registration in Australia.
Our specialised program will familiarise you with the Australian healthcare system, giving you the best chance of success. You’ll be provided with expert training in the key areas of the OSCE, alongside supervised practice in modern clinical facilities.
You’ll study for four weeks, full-time, in small classes with no more than 16 students, ensuring personalised learning and extensive clinical practice.
The program will cover the key competencies required to pass the exam, including:
- contemporary professional practice
- communication skills
- clinical skills
- nursing knowledge.
VU has a proud history of offering nursing related programs accredited by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC).
Note: this course is open to international applicants only. Australian residents are not eligible for this program.
Supervised practice in clinical facilities
Study at state-of-the-art VU campuses in St Albans and Sunshine in the west of Melbourne, where you’ll develop your skills in nursing laboratories that recreate a hospital environment. Expert nursing educators provide scenario-based simulation activities related directly to nursing practice and patient care.
Interactive mannequin technology brings the experience to life. VU’s simulation-based learning blends theory with practice, offering extensive experience of real-life situations based directly on OSCE assessments.
You’ll benefit from repeated opportunities to practice your skills and receive specific and immediate feedback from experienced educators to develop your expertise.
Course intakes
Regular course intakes align with OSCE dates, with the exam usually held in Melbourne the following month.

Learning outcomes
This course has been designed to help prepare Internationally Qualified Registered Nurses (IQRNs) to achieve success when undertaking the national Observed Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE). IQRNs are required to complete the OSCE in order to apply for registration to practice as a Registered Nurse (RN) with AHPRA in Australia. The course includes three units of study which combine theory and practical skill development and will prepare students to undertake the OSCE and learn about the context of nursing practice in Australian healthcare systems. Unit content is based upon Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) OSCE content to ensure students can perform the requisite clinical skills with confidence. Students will also be provided with opportunities to develop and practice their skills in Self-Directed Learning Lab sessions which are facilitated by Self-Directed Learning RNs in our state-of-the-art clinical learning labs. Internationally Qualified Registered Nurses (IQRNs) seeking to work in Australia who have successfully completed the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) test and meet the English language requirements set by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia will be eligible to enrol in this course. COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES: On successful completion of this Course, students will be able to: - Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of person-centered care, incorporating cultural safety, socio-cultural factors and professional considerations in Australian healthcare practice. - Exhibit effective communication strategies and interprofessional practice frameworks to deliver culturally competent care to diverse patient populations. - Critically review evidence-based knowledge to inform nursing practice, and evaluate the outcomes of nursing care. - Integrate legislative and ethical principles, the code of conduct, and best clinical practices in the role and responsibilities of a registered nurse in an Australian context - Exhibit proficiency in clinical skills, including therapeutic communication, physical assessment, nursing care planning, medication administration, and documentation, while ensuring patient safety.
Admission & pathways
Entry requirements
Becoming an Internationally Qualified Registered Nurse (IQRN) in Australia requires several steps.
If you pass the Nursing Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) self-check, you’ll then need to complete a National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) before taking the OSCE.
Applicants for our OSCE Preparation Program must prove they have already passed the NCLEX-RN.
Applicants must also demonstrate they meet the NMBA English language skills registration standard, with an IELTS score of 7.0 in all bands, or equivalent.
