Overview

Upgrade your IT and cyber security skills at Victoria University with this Essential Eight Assessment short course designed by the Australian Signals Directorate’s Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC).

The Essential Eight Assessment Course uses a blend of specialist knowledge, experience and hands-on technical training to enable cyber security and ICT professionals to understand the ACSC’s Essential Eight Assessment Guidance Package and the Essential Eight Maturity Model. These skills and knowledge will enable participants to effectively assess and improve their organisation’s cyber security posture.

The Essential Eight Assessment Course will help cyber and ICT professionals:

  • Understand the intent and application of ACSC’s Essential Eight mitigation strategies.
  • Learn how to use ACSC-designed tools.
  • Accurately test the implementation of the Essential Eight security controls.
  • Develop an accurate an actionable assessment report including a defined action plan to address any weaknesses.

Careers in cyber security

If you are currently employed as an IT professional in a government organisation, you may be required to complete an Essential Eight Assessment at work. This short course will prepare you for success in that assessment, and is recommended as preparation by government workplaces.

The Essential Eight Assessment training will also enhance your professional ability to:

  • consult on cyber security issues
  • provide IT and cyber security services.

Course contents

Participants receive a Certificate of Participation for THACJ Essential Eight Assessment, of completion of attendance from VU.

Participants who successfully pass the Final Assessment, will receive a Certificate from ASD and TAFE cyber (includes online credential).

THACJA Essential Eight Assessment Training

The Essential Eight Assessment Course uses a blend of specialist knowledge, experience and hands-on technical training to enable cyber security and ICT professionals to understand the ACSC's Essential Eight Assessment Guidance Package and the Essential Eight Maturity Model. These skills and knowledge will enable participants to effectively assess and improve their organisation's cyber security posture.

The Essential Eight Assessment Course will help cyber and ICT professionals:
Understand the intent and application of ACSC's Essential Eight mitigation strategies.
Learn how to use ACSC-designed tools.
Accurately test the implementation of the Essential Eight security controls.Develop an accurate an actionable assessment report including a defined action plan to address any weaknesses.

This course suits current workers in a complex IT and cyber industry or related field with at least 3 years of experience.

The program is delivered in two options by attending either, three (3) full days or six (6) half-day workshops on campus, facilitator led delivery will provide an overview of the platform being utilised and expectations of participation whilst ensuring any participant technology issues and structured learning activities required to be completed outside the classroom. There will also be some pre-online learning required before commencement.

Admission & pathways

Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee you entry into this course. Some courses receive more applications than the number of places available. In this situation we will also assess your education, work and other relevant experience.

This course has local admission requirements. All applicants:

- Must have Australian Citizenship or Permanent Residency (provide evidence or sighted)
- Participants must have a minimum of a Certificate IV qualification in a technical ICT discipline and two (2) years' experience in a technical ICT role or
- must have a minimum four (4) years' experience in a technical ICT role
