In this specialised building surveying course, you’ll become an expert in the compliance requirements, regulations and laws for constructing residential and commercial buildings up to three storeys.
If you’re a building surveyor or certifier already working in the construction industry, this course will allow you to expand your skills, get qualified as a Building Surveyor (Level 2) and join the Australian Institute of Building Surveyors, the national professional organisation for building surveying.

Careers in building
With an Advanced Diploma of Building Surveying, you'll be a qualified Building Surveyor (Level 2) and can join the Australian Institute of Building Surveyors (AIBS), the national professional organisation for building surveying.
According to the AIBS, building surveyor students can earn $80,000 and fully qualified building surveyors can earn up to $250,000.
Other job titles you might achieve include:
- building certifier
- assistant building surveyor
- local authority building manager.

Learning outcomes
Throughout this course, learners will develop the skills and knowledge they need to apply legal and ethical requirements to building surveying functions, and assess and advise on the compliance of design documentation for residential and commercial buildings of up to three storeys. They will also learn to research and evaluate construction methods and materials for residential and commercial buildings, and assess and advise on performance-based solutions for buildings up to three storeys. Other areas of study for residential and commercial buildings of up to three storeys will focus on planning and building applications, building surveying audits, and construction and final inspections.
Building surveyors work in a highly regulated environment and require an understanding of relevant compliance requirements as well as traditional, new and emerging construction methods and materials. They make a significant contribution to the development and construction of the built environment, often working in collaboration with specialist consultants to assess and verify that proposed and actual building works are compliant and to ensure the safety of building occupants.
The scope of work undertaken by building surveyors applies to all Classes of residential and commercial buildings as defined in the National Construction Code (NCC), up to three storeys and not exceeding 2,000 square metres in floor area.
