Overview

Learn the basic principles in welding processes including using gas (Mig) and manual metal arc (Stick) welding, tungsten inert gas welding (Tig) and some basic oxy cutting techniques.

Short course dates and times: 

This course will be delivered through a combination of a classroom theory and practical activities in our well-equipped welding workshop.

The first session will provide an overview of the following:

  • occupational health and safety requirements in the welding industry
  • layout of the workshop
  • different types of equipment within the fabrication area.  

You are required to provide your own basic personal protective equipment (PPE), which should include:

  • steel-capped boots
  • 100% cotton drill full-sleeved overalls or similar long-sleeve protective clothing 
  • welding shield
  • safety glasses
  • oxy goggles
  • grinding goggles
  • gauntlet gloves.

Attend a trades campus tour and application support session to see where you'll be learning, and find out more about applying to study at VU Polytechnic.

THAANA - Welding for Beginners

Learn the basic principles in welding processes including using gas (Mig) and manual metal arc (Stick) welding, tungsten inert gas welding (Tig) and some basic oxy cutting techniques.
This course delivery is through a combination of a classroom theory and practical activities in our well-equipped welding workshop in the evenings over 7 weeks. The focus for this course design is for students that have little or no welding experience who wish to gain some basic welding expertise.
Participants will receive a Certificate of Participation, as this is a non-accredited course.
This course is delivered 1 day per week over 7 weeks at Sunshine campus 5:30pm - 9:30 pm.

Admission & pathways

Meeting the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee you entry into this course. Some courses receive more applications than the number of places available. In this situation we will also assess your education, work and other relevant experience.

Students are required to provide their own basic personal protective equipment (PPE) for attendance on the first evening including:
- 100% cotton drill full-sleeved overalls or 100% cotton drill long sleeve shirt and pants (not track pants)
- Steel capped boots
- Welding shield fixed lens or auto-darkening
- Safety glasses
- Grinding googles
- Gauntlet gloves.
Students have the option to purchase a tool kit from a third party which includes the following:
- Automatic welding helmet
- Gauntlet welding gloves
- Tig welding gloves
- Chipper hammer
- Combination spanner
- Welding pliers
- Flint spark lighter
- Oxy tip cleaner
- Wire brush.
