HLT54121 Diploma of Nursing

Entry requirements

All applicants must be aged 18 years of age of over at time of course commencement.
Applicants must complete to determine suitability:
- Pre-training Review (PTR) and an interview which includes a language and calculations test
- Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (LLN). VU use the Basic Key Skills Builder (BKSB) tool for this assessment. Applicants must achieve BKSB level four (4) or exit level three (3) in both literacy and numeracy.
In addition to the above requirements, applicants must also be able to demonstrate that they meet the requirements of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia's (NMBA) English language skills registration standard. Proof of this English language competency can be achieved via one of the following pathways:
1. Primary Language Pathway
The applicant's primary language is English, and they have undertaken and satisfactorily completed at least six (6) years of primary and secondary education, including at least two (2) years between Years 7 and 12. Countries include Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, Canada, South Africa and the United States of America.
Applicants must complete a declaration that English is their primary language prior to enrolment.
2. English Language Test Pathway
Applicants must be able to demonstrate that they have achieved the required minimum scores in one of the approved English language tests as specified in the NMBA's English language skills registration standard prior to acceptance of an offer.
- IELTS the IELTS (academic module) with a minimum overall score of 7 and a minimum score of 7 in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing and speaking).
- OET with a minimum score of B in each of the four components (listening, reading, writing and speaking).
- PTE Academic with a minimum overall score of 65 and a minimum score of 65 in each of the four communicative skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking).
- TOEFL iBT with a minimum total score of 94 and the following minimum score in each section of the test 24 for listening, 24 for reading, 27 for writing, and 23 for speaking.
The above test results will be accepted from one sitting only. Test results will also be accepted from a maximum of 2 sittings in six (6) months but this pathway specifies additional requirements.
3. Extended Education pathway
- The applicant can provide evidence demonstrating successful completion of at least five (5) years (full-time equivalent) of continuous education taught and assessed solely in English, in a recognised country that is a combination of:
- vocational and secondary education taught and assessed in English; or
- tertiary and vocational education taught and assessed in English; or
- combined tertiary, secondary and vocational education taught and assessed in English; or
- tertiary education taught and assessed in English.
The last period of education must have been no more than five years prior to applying for registration.

In addition to all the above requirements, all students must provide the following documentation prior to placement:

- A National Disability Insurance Scheme Worker Screening Check (NDIS Check)

- Must have any COVID-19 vaccine prior to the commencement of placement. Students will be required to provide evidence prior to the commencement of placement. If students are not compliant with this requirement, they are not eligible to undertake a placement and this will mean that they will not be able to progress within their course.
