Overview

Become a highly-skilled building project manager with a Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) CPC50220 at Victoria University (VU).

Gain specialist skills and knowledge from experienced industry professionals and equip yourself to run a successful construction business in residential, industrial or commercial.

At VU, everything you learn in your building and construction course has direct links to the real world, from the latest industry-standard knowledge to practical on-site projects.

You’ll learn about all aspects of running a small-to-medium construction business, including:

  • quantity surveying
  • planning and scheduling of labour and materials
  • selecting contractors
  • managing project risk and quality
  • supervising work sites
  • construction technology
  • managing workplace safety
  • applying business codes and standards
  • structural principles for residential and commercial constructions
  • interpretation of plans and specifications
  • small business finance.

If you’re already working in the construction industry or undertaking a traineeship, you can study this course full-time or part-time alongside your work.

Choose from either:

  • full time: two years on-campus, three days a week 9am–5pm on weekdays
  • part time: four years online, two to three nights a week 5pm–8pm on weeknights.

The Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) is a highly practical course that integrates with your work in the construction industry, so you must have access to active building sites while you’re studying.

With a Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) from VU, you’ll be equipped to take on greater responsibility in building and construction.

Take advantage of working within one of Australia’s largest industries, with 10% further growth expected by 2026. You could take on roles such as:

  • registered builder
  • estimator
  • building supervisor
  • construction manager.

Course structure

To be awarded the CPC50220 Diploma of Building and Construction (Building), 27 units must be completed consisting of:
- 24 core units
- 3 elective units, of which:
- a maximum of one unit may be from any training package or accredited course as long as it ensures the integrity of the qualification's Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) alignment and contributes to a valid, industry-supported vocational outcome.

VU Polytechnic delivers the electives listed in the ‘course structure and units’ below. These electives have been selected based on industry needs, graduate pathways and/or student and teacher feedback. Alternative suitable electives are only available via Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Transfer (CT).

This qualification reflects the role of building professionals who apply knowledge of structural principles, risk and financial management, estimating, preparing and administering building and construction contracts, selecting contractors, overseeing the work and its quality and managing construction work in building projects including residential and commercial with the following limitations:

Residential construction limited to National Construction Code Class 1 and 10 buildings to a maximum of 3 storeys.

Commercial construction limited to National Construction Code Class 2 to 9 buildings, Type C and B construction.

  • full fee-paying place pay the full fee tuition rate (which includes Student Services and Amenities Fee and any material fees).

- Literacy and numeracy assessment.
- attend an interview
In addition, practical demonstration of skills on a building and construction site will/may be required for some units of competency, near the completion of the course. Students will/may need to have access to a building and construction site. However, if the student is not working in an appropriate industry, VU can support the student with veer simulation activities.
Traineeship applicants must complete to determine suitability:
- Pre-training Review (PTR)
- Literacy and numeracy assessment
- must have an active employer
- must be registered as a trainee and have an active Epsilon number prior to commencing the course.
