Overview

If you have special learning needs and would like to learn about working in hospitality, the Certificate II in Work Education 22631VIC at Victoria University is for you.

Designed for people with intellectual disability or cognitive impairment, this supportive program develops skills for work in hospitality. It is the next step up from the 22566VIC Certificate I in Work Education, which gives you foundations for your first job.

The course is open to people with learning needs who are old enough to have completed school and would like to learn what is expected at work in kitchens and cafes.

Learning in professional hospitality facilities, you will experience the world of work with support from your teachers. With new confidence, you can build your skills in a real workplace during your practical placement.

In an inclusive, caring environment with specialist teachers, you will explore:

  • which jobs are right for you
  • what kind of behaviour is expected at work
  • safe ways of working.

We can also teach you how to travel to work using public transport, prepare simple meals in a professional kitchen, and how to interview for a job.

This job-skills course will help you to find and apply for your first job.

Once you have finished the course you will be ready for entry-level roles, like:

  • retail assistant
  • cafe server
  • kitchen assistant
  • cleaning team member
  • gardening assistant
  • supermarket worker.

 

Course structure

To be awarded the 22631VIC Certificate II in Work Education, a total of 10 units of competency must be achieved, comprising of:
3 core units
1 unit must be selected from the list of WHS/OHS units that best supports the vocational focus of the elective units selected 6 electives units from:
- elective units listed below, where units may be chosen from within or across any listed skill cluster
- units from other endorsed or accredited training products where the unit/s are first packaged in AQF level 1, 2 or 3 qualifications in the source training product and reflect the integrity and intent of the qualification.

VU Polytechnic delivers the electives listed in the ‘course structure and units’ below. These electives have been selected based on industry needs, graduate pathways and/or student and teacher feedback. Alternative suitable electives are only available via Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Transfer (CT).

The Certificate II in Work Education meets a clearly identified need to provide the development of critical employment-ready skills, knowledge and behaviours essential for workplace participation by people who have a permanent cognitive impairment / intellectual disability. This course is designed for learners who require additional and highly structured support to access meaningful work opportunities and/or further training.The Certificate II in Work Education does not have a focus on any specific vocational area but provides the opportunity for learners to explore different vocational areas that may be of interest to them. The educational outcomes across the course support development in a range of contexts including for personal, employment, volunteering and further study purposes. The course is structured to provide a range of potential pathways from the qualification through flexibility in the choice of units of competency from accredited courses or endorsed training packages.

The amount you pay for your course depends on whether you’re offered a government subsidised place or a full fee-paying place.

Students who enrol in a:

  • government subsidised place pay subsidised tuition fees (the government contributes the rest), and may be required to pay a Student Services and Amenities Fee along with any material fees
  • full fee-paying place pay the full fee tuition rate (which includes Student Services and Amenities Fee and any material fees).

Entry requirements

Entry to the 22631VIC Certificate II in Work Education is intended for post-compulsory school-age learners with evidence of a permanent cognitive and /or intellectual disability. Evidence of permanent cognitive and/or intellectual disability could include but is not limited to:
* Formal assessment by a registered medical practitioner
* Doctors/specialist reports
* Attendance at a Specialist School/ SDS
* Integration support at school* Integration support at school with modified curriculum.
All applicants are required to complete the following to determine suitability:
* Interview
* Pre-training Review (PTR)* Literacy and numeracy assessment.
For employment and practical placement purposes, all applicants require:
* Valid Working with Children Check* Satisfactory Police Check (valid within 6 months of course commencement)

You may be able to complete your qualification sooner through formal recognition of your existing skills. This is known as Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

To receive RPL, we assess your previous work, education and life experiences against recognised qualifications. Applications for RPL can be made prior to enrolling.
