Our Bachelor of Business at Victoria University Sydney provides you with flexibility and professional development to help you prepare for a constantly changing local and global business workforce. Develop a solid foundation in core business studies followed by a choice of major study from specialty business areas.

The course is taught over three years. It offers challenging, engaging and valued real-world experiences. Through a range of educational approaches and curricula you will further develop intellectual, analytical, organisational, personal and interpersonal skills.

Course structure

To attain the Bachelor of Business, students will be required to complete 288 credit points (equivalent to 24 units) consisting of:

  • 96 credit points (equivalent to 8 units) of Core Business units
  • 96 credit points (equivalent to 8 units) of Major studies selected from the majors listed below
  • 96 credit points (equivalent to 8 units) made up of either:
    • 2nd Major 96 credit points (equivalent to 8 units), or
    • 1 Discipline Minor 48 credit points (equivalent to 4 units) and 1 Breadth Minor 48 credit points (equivalent to 4 units).

Please note: all students must complete BPD2100 International Business Challenge.

Students will complete BPD2100 International Business Challenge:

  • in place of BPD3100 Applied Business Challenge when completing a second major; or
  • when completing a Breadth Minor.

Majors

The Bachelor of Business gives options to tailor your learning to your specific needs.

All students study a common first year which is complemented in second and third years by majors in either of two business study areas.

Graduate with an Accounting major and be prepared to work in a variety of roles in accounting practices, medium and large corporations, the public sector and not-for-profit organisations.

Career opportunities in accounting include roles such as:

  • accountant
  • business analyst
  • auditor
  • financial advisor
  • taxation consultant.

Accreditation

The Accounting Major is accredited by CPA Australia and the Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ).

Professional Recognition

Graduate with an Accounting major and you'll meet the requirements for membership with CPA Australia when the appropriate sequence of units is completed.

Entry into the Institute of Chartered Accountants – Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ) Chartered Accountants Program requires the completion of the same sequence of units plus Taxation Law and Practice and Auditing units.

In the Information Systems Management major you'll examine information systems analysis, modelling, development, digital commerce and management techniques and approaches. You'll apply your learning to develop and deliver an information systems project.

Gain the fundamental concepts, knowledge and skills required to facilitate a career in business analysis, project management, data management or e-business in a global economy.

Career opportunities in the ICT sector include roles such as:

  • systems analyst
  • business analyst
  • help desk operator
  • programmer (and designer)
  • applications developer
  • network administrator
  • information systems manager.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • critically review, synthesise and adapt business theories to analyse authentic contemporary problems in a variety of domestic and international contexts appreciating the value of diversity and intercultural settings
  • exhibit professional judgement in the selection and use of common business tools to support decision-making and project management in a general business context
  • critically evaluate priorities and articulate key issues in complex business problems
  • analyse and reflect on the impact of contemporary external (strategy, cultural and other competitive pressures) and internal factors (structure, culture and systems) to achieve effective business practices
  • critically review and apply practical, effective and ethically responsible solutions with initiative and professional judgement to a range of business-related challenges at both strategic and operational levels          
  • contribute effectively, with personal accountability for outcomes in a dynamic 21st century work team, working in an ethical and socially responsible manner whilst acknowledging the contributions of others in achieving both individual and team goals

Entry requirements

English language requirements

You must provide evidence that you have completed an approved English language test and achieved one of the results described below:

  • IELTS (Academic Module): overall score (no band less than) 6.0 (6.0)
  • TOEFL Internet: overall score (section score no less than) 67 (listening 12, speaking 18, reading 15, writing 21)
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE): overall score (no section score less than) 50-57 (50)
  • University of Cambridge – Advanced (CAE): overall score of 169 (no individual band less than 169)
  • VU English – University Preparation UPU (Undergraduate): Achieved
  • English Language School in Sydney (ELSIS) – EAP 2 (advanced): B grade.

Recognition of prior English language studies

If you have completed a qualification where English was the primary language of instruction, you may be eligible for an English language exemption. Check our guide to English language requirements to find out if you qualify.

Students who don't meet the English language requirements may choose to undertake an intensive English course at the English Language School in Sydney (ELSIS).

Academic requirements

Entry into the Bachelor of Business requires you to have completed at least one of the following:

  • TAFE:
    • successful completion of a cognate (similar discipline) Australian Diploma or Advanced Diploma (or equivalent), will be granted advanced standing of a maximum 96 credit points (Diploma) or 144 credit points (Advanced Diploma), or
    • successful completion of a non-cognate (not similar) Australian (or equivalent) Diploma or Advanced Diploma, will be granted advanced standing on a case by case basis.
  • Year 12: successful completion of an Australian Senior Secondary Certificate (VCE or equivalent) including Units 3 and 4 with a minimum study score of 25 in English (EAL) or 20 in any other English.
  • International: IELTS (or equivalent) overall score of 6 with no band less than 6.0, plus:
    • successful completion of an Australian Senior Secondary Certificate (VCE or equivalent), or
    • successful completion of an Australian Diploma or Advanced Diploma (or equivalent)
  • Mature: applicants with relevant work, education and/or community experience will be considered for admission to the course.
