The Victoria University Business School and Institute for Sustainable Industries & Liveable Cities with the support of CMA Australia is hosting a research conference: Environmental, Social and Governance for Sustainability on Friday 29 October 2021 (online).

We have accepted abstracts for papers (submission is closed) that investigate Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) issues such as:

  • ESG reporting, assurance, or regulations
  • UN sustainability goals
  • ESG measurement
  • investor expectations
  • circular economy
  • involvement of different sectors, including not for profit and public sector.

This year, the conference will also focus on the impact of COVID-19 and future priorities.

Keynote speakers

CEO of the Institute of Certified Management Accountants

Professor Janek Ratnatunga is the CEO of the Institute of Certified Management Accountants. He has held appointments at the University of Melbourne, Monash University and the Australian National University in Australia, and the Universities of Washington, Richmond and Rhode Island in the USA.

Prior to his academic career he worked with KPMG.

Board member of the Business Council for Sustainable Development Australia

Toby Kent is a board member of the Business Council for Sustainable Development Australia and an Associate of the Melbourne Sustainable Society Institute, an honorary role offered in recognition of his contributions to sustainable development in Australia.

Toby was the first-ever Chief Resilience Officer appointed in Australia and is a director of EllisKent Consulting. He has a masters degree in Housing and Urbanisation from the London School of Economics.

Director, Science and Reporting at Commissioner for Environmental Sustainability, Victoria

Dr Scott Rawlings is the Director, Science and Reporting for the Office of the Commissioner for Environmental Sustainability, Victoria. The Office’s role is to provide independent and objective reporting to inform policy-makers, scientists and the wider Victorian public on the state’s natural environment.

Scott has worked for the Office since 2010 and has played a key role in the production of Victoria’s first State of the Bays report, an historic baseline study of the health of Port Phillip Bay and Western Port; the Science for Sustainable Development Framework, and the State of the Environment, State of the Yarra and its Parklands and State of the Forests 2018 reports.

Director of Equilibrium, a sustainability consulting and Management Company

Nick is the Managing Director of Equilibrium, a sustainability consulting and Management Company servicing a range of private companies and governments around Australia.

From 2009 to 2014 Nick was also a director of the Metropolitan Waste Management Group and was the chairman of the stakeholder reference group for the development of the National Television and Computer Recycling Scheme under the Product Stewardship Act.

Prior to Equilibrium, Nick was group general manager of environment at packaging and recycling company Visy. He has a background in corporate affairs and government.

Managing Director, Greater Western Water, MBA (Prof), B. Eng (Hons) (Chem), B.Comm

Maree was appointed the inaugural Managing Director of Greater Western Water, 1 July 2021. Maree was previously appointed Managing Director of City West Water in April 2020 and was appointed Acting Managing Director in November 2019.

Prior to this Maree was an executive with City West Water, leading the delivery of water services to over one million Melbournians across the Melbourne CBD, inner suburbs and the growing western region, as well as the delivery of major new assets vital for growth, urban renewal and government infrastructure.

She brings a passion to lead culture, safety and business transformation in order to deliver exceptional outcomes for customers and the communities we service.

Maree combines her water-sector experience with a diverse and commercially driven background. Her leadership was recognised by her inclusion as IPAA Top 50 Women in Public Sector (Victoria) 2018.

Publication opportunity

Presenters will have the chance to publish in a journal special issue of the Australasian Accounting Business and Finance Journal.

Reviewing process of submissions for special issue:

  • All manuscripts will be subjected to double blind peer-review process and not have been previously published
  • The corresponding author is responsible for ensuring that the article’s publication has been approved by all other co-authors and takes responsibility for the paper during submission and peer review.
  • Review comments will be communicated to you and you may require to do necessary revisions and send revised paper on or before prescribed date.
  • The publisher will not be held legally responsible should there be any claims.
  • Acceptance or non-acceptance of the paper is solely in the hands of editorial board
