About Matthew Lamb
Dr Matthew Lamb has worked at Victoria University since 2012.
He is an expert in the field of mechanical vibrations and continuous condition assessment.
His PhD focused on monitoring the structural integrity of protective packaging systems using both frequency domain techniques and adaptive digital filters.
Currently, Dr Lamb’s research focus on the minimisation of packaging waste through the mechanical characterisation of protective cushioning materials and developing a better understanding of the hazards which exist in the distribution environment.
This research includes the characterisation of environmental alternatives to petrochemical based polymers and the publication of findings that will lead to improved simulation (laboratory testing) of the distribution environment.
Selected research highlights
2017 visit to Belgium: Dr Lamb was invited to the Department of Theoretical Mechanics, Dynamics and Vibrations group at Université de Mons (Belgium).
IAPRI 2015: Acted as session chair for the Distribution Packaging session of the 27th IAPRI Symposium (world packaging symposium) held in Valencia, Spain.
2014 IAPRI World Conference: Victoria University hosted the 19th IAPRI World Conference on Packaging. Dr Lamb was a member of the organising committee and was also responsible for reviewing a number of abstracts and full papers. The conference was attended by 140 delegates from 25 countries and included 105 scientific papers.
2012 Researcher Development Grant Scheme: Awarded $29,150 to fund his research for 2013.

Teaching activities & experience
Since 2005, Dr Lamb has taught units (subjects) from pathway level through to final year tertiary level engineering units.
He currently teaches:
- Mechanical Engineering Design (second year)
- Advanced Engineering Design (final year)
- Dynamics (second year)
- Third year Stress Analysis (Finite Element Analysis using Ansys) and Engineering Analysis (frequency domain analysis using Matlab).
Selected teaching and service highlights
MotorEx 2018: The VU Motorsport designed (led by Dr Lamb) Clements Motorsport Sports Sedan was put on display at Australia’s largest and most prestigious car show.
2014 Student Study Tour: Dr Lamb led a three-week student study tour to Sheffield Hallam University in the United Kingdom.
2013 Formula SAE: Dr Lamb led the VU Motorsport team to the four day Formula SAE competition.
2012 OptimumG Seminar (3 day): Dr Lamb arranged for VU to host an international seminar focusing on vehicle suspension systems design https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8RvOgKIAmo.
To develop his teaching further, he undertook (and completed) a Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Education from 2012-2014. This included a major study on the use of enquiry based learning (specifically the use of PBL in conceptually challenging units in engineering) and another on supervising postgraduate research.
