About Juliana Ryan
Juliana is the research officer at AVID Australia at VU, a whole school improvement system built around three levels of professional learning to strengthen teaching excellence and learning outcomes for every student over time. She is a values-driven and inclusive researcher, educator and equity practitioner, motivated by the potential of learning to improve quality of life by expanding what it is possible to imagine, be, do and become. Juliana strives to enable those she works with to believe in and develop their potential. Taking a strengths perspective, she believes that we all have personal and environmental resources that we can draw on to develop ourselves, and overcome challenges, even in seemingly unpromising situations.
Juliana's deliberately varied employment history has been shaped by an ongoing concern with achieving social justice through education that builds participants’ capabilities and agency. Her roles have spanned teaching, research, and equity practice at several universities. Her contributions have been recognised through team awards for learning and teaching at two universities and she is a senior fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Juliana has also worked in program management, policy analysis and development, communications consulting and community education in government and non-government organisations. She has worked on a number of cross-institutional research projects in both schools and higher education. Her research interests and experience include communities of practice and social learning, professional learning, inclusive curricula and pedagogies, diversity and inclusion policy and practice, and academic identities and practices.
