About Clare Hanlon
Clare is a Professor and the inaugural Susan Alberti Women in Sport Chair. The role of the Chair is to increase the pace to advance women in sport. This will be achieved by strengthening sector alignment and collaboration, facilitating research insights to enhance decision making and advocate the career pathways for women in sport.
Internationally-recognised for her determined pursuit of evidence, advocacy, and impact to create change, Clare assists organisations break down barriers and increase opportunities for girls and women to lead and participate in sport and physical activity.
Clare and her team are continually sought to provide research and translate insights into practice. Clare also advises international, national and state peak bodies on social change for the benefit of girls and women.
Evidence of her work includes:
- Collaborate with PUMA Germany on global research, ‘What girls want in sport uniforms’
- Co-lead with Federal Government on a national policy framework for women in sport
- Co-design with sport, surgery and trade Member Associations an intervention to encourage women as leaders
- Develop evidence-based action guides to drive social change e.g. To encourage women from culturally diverse backgrounds as leaders in sport
- Advise three State/Territory Governments on infrastructure, systems, and programs to encourage women and girls in sport
- Member of the Victorian Ministerial Inquiry for Women and Girls in Sport and Active Recreation.
Clare is Co-Chair AusCycling, Inclusion & Diversity Advisory Group and previously was:
- inaugural Director, Oceania Gymnastics Union
- Director, Gymnastics Australia
- Chair, Australian Women in Sport Advisory Group
- Member, Tennis Australia Women in Sport Strategy Advisory Group and VicHealth Physical Activity Taskforce. In 2018, in recognition of creating change, Clare was inducted into the Victorian Women’s Honour Roll.
In 2016, she was recognised as a Change our Game role model by the Victorian Minister for Sport and a chapter was dedicated to Clare in the book Oceania inspirational women: Making a difference in physical education, sport and dance.
