Vixens welcomed to the VU family

Victoria University has announced that it will sponsor Netball Victoria and the Melbourne Vixens for the next five years.

This will be the first partnership between an Australian university and an elite women's sporting team and highlights Victoria University's ever growing status as Australia's Sports University.

Victoria University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Peter Dawkins said, "This partnership with Netball Victoria and the Melbourne Vixens reinforces our commitment to women's sport and our desire to offer opportunities for young sportswomen to excel."

"We are proud to welcome the Vixens and netball Victoria into the VU family."

Dr Susan Alberti AO, advocate for women's sport and newly announced Chair of the Victoria University Foundation, said, "In this my first official function as Chair of the Victoria University Foundation, I couldn't think of anything better than being here this morning supporting women's sport. This will further strengthen VU's sporting ties."

"I support and encourage young women to get involved in sport – being involved in sport teaches us about ourselves."

Netball Victoria CEO, Michelle Plane said, "This partnership in many ways is a step towards continuing the growth of netball within our state and showcases the commitment of Victoria University to both the sport of netball and supporting women's sport in this country."

"Netball Victoria is delighted to announce this major partnership with Victoria University for five years. It is groundbreaking for the sport of netball and we are excited about the opportunities ahead to work together," Ms Plane said.

Bianca Chatfield, captain of the Melbourne Vixens and vice-captain of the Australian Diamonds, will be the official ambassador and public face of the partnership.

Victoria University has the largest number of students enrolled in sport's courses in Australia and world leading research facilities.

Opportunities for students to work with Netball Victoria and the Melbourne Vixens will greatly enhance what the University offers. This unique partnership will strengthen VU's outstanding reputation in sport.

Note: Victoria University and The Melbourne Vixens had a long-standing partnership until August 2018.
