Library collections promoted to Pacific Island students

At a recent meeting of Pacific Island students attending universities in Melbourne, Victoria University Librarian Ralph Kiel gave a presentation about the library's special collections related to PNG and the Pacific and Timor Leste.

Also attending the meeting were Dr Helen Hill, Honorary Fellow, College of Arts, Victoria University; Ben Anwyl, President of Victoria University Postgraduate Association; and Nana Waehama, President of VU International Student Association.

The PNG and the Pacific collection features a range of books, reports, journals, newsletters, yearbooks and pamphlets that focus mainly on Papua New Guinea, but also includes items from the greater Pacific and South East Asian regions. The collection's strengths are: economics, development and trade, statistical data, governance and administration, language and linguistics, education, culture, society and history.

The Timor-Leste collection, which also includes a range of books, reports, journals, newsletters, yearbooks and pamphlets, focuses chiefly on Timor-Leste as an independent nation but also covers its occupation by other countries. The collection's strengths are: economics, development and trade, politics, governance and administration, education, culture, society and history.

These two special collections are located within the Special Collection room at the Footscray Park Library. Items cannot be borrowed, but may be used within the library.
