The Honourable Michael Kirby Contract Law Moot Competition has wrapped up for another year with a strong performance by the VU teams. Victoria University was the only Victorian team to advance to the semi-finals.
The two-day event held at VU’s historic Queen Street Campus in the heart of Melbourne’s legal district attracted a record number of entrants with 90 competitors, in 24 teams representing 15 Australian law schools. The Honourable Michael Kirby, Michael Wyles SC and Leslie Glick SC arbitrated the finals in the County Court of Victoria show court.
In announcing Queensland University of Technology as winner of the third annual Michael Kirby Contract Law Moot, retired High Court Judge Michael Kirby acknowledged the team’s exceptional performances as an indication of the excellence of all competitors.
“It was an outstanding performance. This final was not only entertaining but at times riveting. Victoria University Law School is to be congratulated for running such a fabulous competition.”

Moot Coordinator Vivi Tan says she is delighted with the growth of the event from just 11 teams in 2011 to 24 in 2013.
“This is the fastest growing mooting competition in Australia. It’s an intellectually stimulating and challenging experience for all mooters. Every competitor can be congratulated for their participation, the skills they develop and the professional exposure they gain during this event which is invaluable for their legal careers.”
The College of Law and Justice introduced the first in Australian inter-university moot competition on Contract Law in 2011. The moot program – a mock court which simulates the proceedings of a live court room – reinforces the College’s teaching focus on commercial law and practical legal skills.
