A Victoria University telecommunications expert has landed a prestigious Australian Research Council grant for research to improve mobile roaming.
Professor Mike Faulkner from the College of Engineering and Science has been successful in winning an ARC Linkages Project grant for his study to improve wireless terminals.
"Today, nearly half the radio spectrum below 3.0 GHz has been earmarked for public radio communications somewhere in the world," he said.
"Unfortunately, for historical reasons, the spectrum allocations are fragmented into over 40 different bands, while today's smart phones can only handle 5 bands."
Professor Faulkner said the aim was to develop a new frequency flexible wireless transceiver structure for the next generation of smart phones and wireless devices.
"This research will improve the roaming experience of travelers and reduce the cost of wireless connectivity, enabling new applications such as machine-to-machine communications and the internet-of-things," Professor Faulkner said.
Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Warren Payne congratulated Professor Faulkner's team and industry partners, Ericsson Research in Sweden, STMicroelectronics in France and Telstra Australia for the $210,000 ARC grant.
"It's an excellent achievement which I believe will spark a chain of future successes for our University in this important scheme," Professor Payne said.
