Facebook: Friend and Foe?
Research on the effects of social networking sites on individual self esteem has boomed in the last few years. However, the findings vary remarkedly. VU student Katherine Ewert will be researching the effects of social networking sites as part of her Honours.
Katherine's study, 'Facebook: Friend and Foe? The Paradoxical Effect of Facebook on Self Esteem and the Mediating Role of Social Comparison'Reviewed page following stale content report - , will draw on two theories: the Hyperpersonal Model (Walther, 1996) and Social Comparison Theory (Festinger, 1954). The study will look at whether Facebook can be both a friend and a foe, and explain why Facebook users differ in their level of self esteem when engaging online.
Anyone over the age of 18 is welcome to complete the survey, even if you currently do not have a Facebook account.
The Facebook Friend and Foe online survey is anonymous and will take you approximately five minutes to complete. You will not be asked to provide your name or any identifying information at any point in the survey.
