Victoria University has announced the prestigious appointment of Professor Nicola Yelland to a national committee that will judge the quality of research across Australian universities.
The Victoria University Professor will sit on the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) committee to evaluate research in the field of Education and Human Society.
This is one of eight discipline-based research evaluation committees that will assess the research quality at each Australian university in the 2012 ERA assessment.
The panels give universities a score in each field of research based on the reports of expert peer reviewers, academic citation data and other information.
Victoria University is also celebrating that more than 20 of its academics have been invited to perform as peer reviewers in the 2012 ERA assessment. The academics were chosen by the Australian Research Council for being well-respected in their fields and will spend up to six weeks in the middle of this year assessing and comparing the quality of research outputs from other Australian universities against the 'world standard' benchmark.
Victoria University senior business analyst Dr Melanie McGuire said it was a big improvement on the 2010 ERA assessment when only a couple of Victoria University academics were invited to participate.
"It's recognition of the calibre of Victoria University academics that they're being invited to assess the quality of research in such an important exercise," Dr McGuire said.
