An innovative new trade training facility has opened this week in Newport.
Launched this week at Victoria University's Newport campus, The Building Consultancy will run as an actual business where building, building design and building surveying students actively participate in projects for external clients.
In the future, skills ranging from plumbing and carpentry to painting and decorating will possibly be available through the purpose built, six-star building.
Speaking at Tuesday's opening Victoria University Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Dawkins said it would equip students with the real-world skills of self-regulated learning, teamwork and dealing with change through critical thinking and problem solving.
"These are skills which enable our students to keep abreast of changes in their industry by promoting in them a sense of independence, the ability to 'learn as they go' and an understanding that as changes occur they have the skills, knowledge and confidence to adapt to the changes," Professor Dawkins said.
The planning and design of the building has already involved VU staff and students in a vast range of activities, including drafting working drawings, design, estimation, plan checking and preparing documentation.
Professor Dawkins said the project was testament to the university's commitment to providing a distinctive curriculum approach to teaching and learning.
"This project has lead to the enhancement of student potential, professional and personal growth for staff, as well as the expansion of industry and community involvement in our institution," he said.
