Victoria University will be participating in Earth Hour on Saturday 27th, March 2010
Earth Hour is an initiative of WWF- Australia, which calls on individuals and businesses around the world, to turn off their lights for one hour on Saturday 27th, March 2010 between 8.30pm and 9.30pm. Earth Hour 2010 aims to reach more than one billion people in 1100 cities around the world, 100 more cities than last year.
The event will clearly demonstrate in participating cities, the connection between energy usage and climate change, showing that we as broader community can address the biggest threat our planet has ever faced.
Victoria University already switches off lights in our buildings after hours. During Earth Hour VU will also be switching off the Victoria University neon signs at Flinders Street and Footscray Park campuses. St Albans, Sunshine, Newport, Melton, Sunbury and Werribee campuses have no external lighting that is appropriate to switch off. Emergency lighting and security systems will remain on as normal.
Staff and students can switch off their computers and lights at the end of each day, including the standby button on the monitor. Other items that can also be switched off include printers, microwaves and coffee machines at the power point.
