Victoria University's amateur men's and women's football clubs have been fortunate to gain some pre season training at the Western Bulldog's home; Whitten Oval.
As part of the relationship between VU and the Western Bulldogs, this is one of the direct benefits for students and the sporting community. President of the men's club, Robert Thorp, said "It's been fantastic and made such made such a significant difference to the club lifting spirits amongst the group. It's also been great from a recruitment point of view as people are very impressed when we say we have been training on an AFL venue. We have been getting around 35 to 40 guys consistently to training, which for this early in the year has been very encouraging. Over the nights we have had there in the last 3 weeks, we would have had 60 players train at least once."
The men's club, UHS-VU, is competing in the Victorian Amateur competition and the women's team, VU St Albans Spurs, have teams competing in the Victorian Women's League. Both clubs are keen to hear from students interested in playing Australian Rules Football in 2010. Both clubs continue their pre season training incorporating Whitten Oval during February and March.
