Senior appointments and departures

We farewell a handful of senior staff at the end of the year, including Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor John McCallum, who leaves in December. After five years at VU, Professor McCallum will become Senior Scientist Public Health with the National Health and Medical Research Council in Canberra in February.

Professor McCallum’s higher education portfolio will largely be assumed by Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research and Region, Professor Linda Rosenman, who adds responsibilities for the three higher education faculties to her portfolio and takes on the role of Provost.

Pro Vice-Chancellor Students Dr Stephen Weller has taken up an appointment as Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the Cairns campus of James Cook University. His portfolio will mostly be assumed by Pro Vice-Chancellor Teaching and Learning Professor Greg Baxter.

Pro Vice-Chancellor Industry and Community Professor Peter Creamer becomes Chief Information Officer, taking on additional oversight of the Library, Information Technology Services, Student Futures and the Web Futures Group.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Director TAFE Dr Anne Jones adds VU College to her TAFE and International portfolio.

Director of Workforce Planning Lionel Newman becomes director of the newly created Government Liaison Unit, set up in August to assist the Vice-Chancellor in liaising with all levels of government.

Also leaving is Professor Rodger Eade, Director of the Office of the Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor, to work as a consultant. Professor Eade is one of the longest serving members of staff, having been at VU and its predecessor institution, Footscray Institute of Technology, for 35 years.

The Director of the Institute for Community and Ethnicity Policy Alternatives, Professor Hurriyet Babacan, is also departing for the Cairns campus of James Cook University, where she will become Director of JCU’s new Cairns Institute, where the university’s research will be concentrated.
