2009 Australian University Games results

After a week of intense competition the 2009 Australian University Games (AUG) Gold Coast Queensland ended on Friday 2 October. VU finished with some great individual and team results, scooping 3 gold, 7 silver and 2 bronze medals and finishing in 20th place overall on points from 41 competing universities. 170 VU students competed in the sports of Australian Rules, Athletics, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Hockey, Kendo, Golf, Handball, Netball, Soccer, Swimming, Taekwondo, Touch, Ultimate Frisbee and Volleyball.

Highlights

The Taekwondo team recorded the strongest results with 3 gold and 3 silver medals from the 8 member squad. The defending national champion Netball Mixed team were over run in a fierce gold medal match against UTS (46 - 52 ) finishing with silver. Handball Mixed won bronze defeating the University of Sydney (21 – 8). Australian Rules Women were defeated (23 – 28) for bronze by Monash finishing in 4th place.

Athletics - Daniel Pagnoccolo – Silver Triple Jump and Troy Kamene – Bronze Pole Vault.
Kendo - Nozomi Fukada - Silver Individual Women and Open divisions.

Green and Gold Merit Team Selections

Thirteen (13) students were selected by the governing body Australian University Sport to green and gold teams recognising outstanding individual sporting performance and “best in their sport” at the AUG.

The week was a great display of team spirit and camaraderie on and off the playing field and the efforts of student competitors, team managers and coaches was fantastic. Congratulations is extended to all involved. Those students announced in Green and Gold teams will be formally recognised by the University at the 2009 VU Sport Awards on 19 November
