The Joinery Department at Newport have generously donated a student-built cubbyhouse to the Kinglake Fire Brigade to help raise money for an Ultra Light Tanker. The Tanker will be used in Kinglake to traverse the more inaccessible locations within the brigade area – areas that larger tankers cannot access.
The cubbyhouse was donated to a fundraising Dinner held at Box Hill TAFE where over 200 people attended and placed bids and over 40 other donated items in the silent auction. Carpentry and Joinery teacher Nick Del Grosso who arranged for the students to build the 2.4m x 1.8m cubbyhouse attended the night.
This opportunity came about due to the collaboration and networking between VU and other TAFE providers especially Box Hill TAFE. The joinery department prides itself on teaching students industry skills by producing live-work in real life situations and life skills and the ability to deal with a range of people from different groups and backgrounds. The joinery department tries to involve itself in a least one community project per year.
“Every time we do these projects, the students get a real sense of satisfaction and they love the fact that they are giving back to their community”, said Nick.
Projects in the past have included, building four kitchen work stations at Sunshine Primary School as part of the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen garden project in conjunction with Box Hill TAFE, a cubby house for the Royal Children’s Hospital which was auctioned to raise money, and a Rotunda for the Rotary Club of Altona.
