Researchers from University of Melbourne are seeking Victoria University students from refugee or immigrant (NESB) backgrounds to participate in a fascinating study about the challenges faced with their educational experience and pathways.
To participants in this study, student will have arrived in Australia within the last ten years as refugees or immigrants (not international students), speak a language other than English at home, be in the second half of their course, and will have experienced secondary education in Australia (VCE or VCAL).
The sessions will be held at Melbourne University and students will be working on their own through an interactive computer program "Pathways through Education", and also participate in a small group discussion. In the computer program, students will be asked to think about how they came to do their current course, the challenges they faced along their educational pathway, and how they overcame those challenges. In the group discussion, students will work together to clarify common challenges, and to interpret their own experiences of challenges in relation to those of others. This research help to understand how young people address the challenges they face throughout their education.
The sessions will take approximately 2 hours in June and students will be given $10 to cover their travel expenses.
