Gayelene is the Course Chair of the Bachelor of Nursing. Her main area of teaching is in mental health.

She has had an extensive career in mental health nursing. Gayelene has worked in a variety of mental health settings including as the unit manager of an acute inpatient unit, senior nurse in community setting, senior crisis team clinician, undergraduate nursing coordinator and clozapine coordinator.

Her research interests include mental health, student wellbeing, and peer support. She completed her PhD in 2013 having undertaken a peer support program for enhancing adherence to oral antipsychotic medication in consumers with schizophrenia.
